Recon: Sweater Into Hat
written by threadslinger
I had this sweater that I absolutely loooved but then it got this stain on the shoulder and despite my best attempts I just could not get it out. I thought I might actually have to throw it away. But, every good craft girl knows its a crime to let good material go to waste. So, I made this rockin’ hat and if you follow these directions you can too. Plus, this is easily a 20 min craft so its short and sweet!
Materials needed
Old sweater
thread
needle
scissors
button or other detail as wanted
Directions
1. Lay sweater flat and measure 8 and a half inches across and about 9 inches up. Cut out a half circle.
2. Turn sweater right sides together and hand sew the circles together.
3. To make the tassel cut off a sleeve of the sweater. Cut out three 1 inch strips and braid together. Sew to top of hat.
4. For flower detail cut out flower shape from left over sweater pieces, sew onto hat with button.
And, there you go a super easy peasy hat from an old sweater!

Does it have to be hand-sewed?
I bet you could use a machine although on some sweater material it might be hard to sew.
Thanks for the tips, I was looking for an easy tutorial on this
Thanks I’m glad it was helpful! Hope your hat turns out cute.
